Writers Block---How to Get Rid of It.

Writer’s block feels like hitting an invisible wall. Sometimes it’s fear. Sometimes it’s perfectionism. Sometimes your brain is just tired. But every version of writer’s block has a way through it.

Here are the most effective approaches, organized by the type of block you might be facing.

🧱 1. The Perfectionism Block

You know what you want to write, but nothing feels “good enough.”

Try:

  • Write a bad version on purpose---lower the bar so far it’s underground.

  • Set a tiny goal---one sentence, not a chapter.

  • Use placeholders---“<describe fight scene later>”.

Why it works: Perfectionism freezes creativity. Permission to be messy unlocks it.

🔍 2. The “I Don’t Know What Happens Next” Block

You’re stuck because the story is stuck.

Try:

  • Ask your characters questions---what do they want, fear, avoid.

  • Write the next boring step---not dramatic, just logical.

  • Jump ahead---write a future scene and connect later.

Why it works: Momentum creates clarity. You don’t need the whole path — just the next stone.

🧠 3. The Overthinking Block

Your brain is too loud to write.

Try:

  • Timed writing---10 minutes, nonstop.

  • Change your environment---new room, new posture, new vibe.

  • Switch mediums---typing → handwriting or vice versa.

Why it works: Changing the physical pattern interrupts the mental loop.

🌱 4. The Low‑Energy Block

You’re not blocked — you’re tired.

Try:

  • Micro‑scenes---write 2–3 sentences only.

  • Dialogue only---skip description until later.

  • Warm‑up writing---something unrelated to your project.

Why it works: You’re conserving energy while still moving forward.

🎨 5. The “I Hate Everything I Write” Block

This one is emotional, not creative.

Try:

  • Change the POV---first person → third person.

  • Change the tone---serious → humorous.

  • Write from another character’s view.

Why it works: You’re not stuck---you’re bored. A new angle wakes the story up.

🔥 6. The Fear Block

Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being seen.

Try:

  • Write privately---tell yourself no one will read this draft.

  • Name the fear---clarity reduces its power.

  • Write as someone else---a persona can feel safer.

Why it works: Fear thrives in vagueness. Naming it shrinks it.

🧪 A Quick Exercise That Works for Almost Everyone

Try this right now:

  1. Pick a scene you’re stuck on.

  2. Write one sentence that describes what must happen.

  3. Write one line of dialogue from any character.

  4. Write one sensory detail (sound, smell, texture).

That’s it. You’ve already broken the block.

However, if you still feel blocked, put on your headphones, turn up the music, and go for a walk. This often helps clear your mind once you allow it to wander.

Hope these help!

Happy Writing!
